I was intending on releasing a post before the election on what each parties stance on cycling was but as each day passed my hopes died just that little bit more. That was until the Labor party released there's. While it was nothing much it did include some notable points
- Northern Bikeway - linking CBD to Kedron Brook Bikeway
- Spend more money creating secure Bikeparking at Busway and Train stations
- strengthen Legalisation around cyclists being struck by motor vehicles
With this out I just started waiting again desperately waiting. Normally when a Major party puts out a policy normally the other party puts out one as well. Not this time, how depressing.
The Greens also did not put out a cycling policy but their transport policy includes over arching cycling statements. The most impressive compared to the other parties is the statement that 5% of road funding would be dedicated to cycling infrastructure. Now while this is far less then is required, it is many times what is currently being done or promised.
With two days to go I sent an email off to the LNP asking about a cycling policy. Guess what I got nothing back and I am still waiting.
So what to do now Queenslanders have got the government they deserve, but what about the Queenslanders that happen to ride bikes what do we deserve and what will we get. The fact is cycling is an important part of the transport network if it is allowed to become part of it. To the west and the south cycling is increasing becoming an important part and the North and the East will do the same once they get decent infrastructure. The Government agencies have spent many thousands of hours working on a Northern Bikeway under Labor guidance. Will this time and money simply be wasted or put into use by building the infrastructure that has all ready been planned for?
Honestly I am sick to death of politics when it comes to cycling we need the infrastructure to the North so the new Government just needs to get on and build the BL**DY thing.
